Protein synthesis is a central process in all cells. Decreased translational rate and fidelity cause cell death and neurodegeneration. A rapidly increasing number of mutations in the protein synthesis machinery have been identified to cause peripheral and central neuropathies in human patients, and the pathogenic mechanisms are only beginning to be understood. In addition, the protein synthesis machinery is heavily targeted by antibiotics to treat infectious diseases. The rising threat of antibiotic resistance calls for a better understanding of how antibiotics work and how pathogens survive antimicrobial treatment. In this lecture, Dr. Ling will discuss the mechanisms and disease connections of protein synthesis defects.
